I seldom recognize myself in the way woman are portrayed. So I started documenting woman myself.
I started this project to ENCOURAGE and EMPOWER all women, film directors, and aspiring film directors to dare take up their space so we can see more of their work. I want to create AWARENESS of the need to represent the world from DIFFERENT sides. Cinema helps create our public memory and makes it easier to see and understand our differences. Changing the world is a tremendous job. One picture at a time is a good start. If you’ve never been on a film set, then this is your ticket to have look behind the scenes and discover THE BEAUTY and THE UGLINESS of it.
This content delves into the profound portrayal of women filmmakers, emphasizing the importance of going beyond surface-level aspects such as red carpet glamour, makeup, attire, age, or physical attributes. It encourages a deeper exploration of the passion and unwavering commitment that these remarkable directors bring to their craft. By listening to their voices and allowing them to awaken a burning sense of purpose and inspiration, one can truly appreciate the impact of women in the filmmaking industry.
THE RED CARPET, THE CELEBRATION, IS ONLY THE LAST PAGE OF A 300 PGS BOOK.

HOW DID THEY GET THERE ?

Film director DELPHINE GIRARD. First shooting day was a night shoot. Brussels March 2022

Time on shoot is limited because of the budget but also because of light. When shooting at night outdoors, you have to have your shots down before the sunrises again. Film director DELPHINE GIRARD on a night shoot of her film “Le plus vivant possible ” Brussels APRIL 2022

Because of covid ANN JULIE VERVAEKE’s feature film project got stuck. In stead of waiting she moved on and started writing a short film. By the time she could film it , she was pregnant. She almost excused herself because she brought in a comfortable seat for herself. Oostende, September 2022

I love to see how a Film director is both extremely strong and vulnerable. I think that’s how beauty is created. VEERLE BAETENS on set. August 2021

To keep track of what the camera is filming, the director watches a video screen during the take.

A lot of directors carry their book on set. The book has the screenplay in it, reference pictures, notes and drawings of shots. It’s a tool to remember the details and to feed the discussions on set. Fragment of the book of ANN JULIE VERVAEKE

Film director KAAT BEELS, rehearsing and framing upcoming shots together with the DOP. Brussels , Juin 2022

I arrived on set just before a break between shots. The director and I only briefly met on a festival. We did not know each other. 15 minutes later I was taking pictures of her pumping. Most of the crew did not notice her absence en where busy changing the set up. The only challenge was to find a cool and safe place to store the milk so it would not end up in someone’s coffee… Yes, that already happened for real.

VEERLE BAETENS, filmdirector on set : “Het smelt.” Staying focused while handling the sensory overload on a 2 streets long film set, evoking a flea market with 80 extras and a horse. August 2021

Most of the time while making a feature film, the director spends alone.

Sometimes the subject of the film requires a female DOP. JULIETTE VAN DORMAEL, DOP. Oostende September 2022.

Another lunch break, or meeting or both.

A filmdirector is accompanied by a crew. Everything you seen in a movie is being decided on beforehand. Every little thing has to be brought and installed in the set. All props, clothing, make up, light gear, camera equipment, food … everything !

” Cinema feeds our collective imagination and adds to the symbolic system. It also tells us a lot about differentiated perceptions of social and cultural realities. Many women filmmakers create and provide a representation of the world and themselves from a life experience and knowledge rooted in their sexual identity. These directors’ production, rich and varied, plays a pioneering role not only with regard to the contents of the films (choice of topics, treatment of relationships between women and men), but also the specific filmmaking form (special relationship to technique, time, space).” I did borrow this from the website of “ellestournent”
MANY THANKS TO ALL THE DIRECTORS FOR LETTING ME INTO YOUR SPACE.
LOVE YOU ALL.
